2011 Vinyl Album Sales Reach Highest Levels Yet!

Johnny Greenwood - Radiohead

2011 has seen the highest levels of vinyl music album sales in the UK since the format was reintroduced.

The U.K. Official Charts Company says that sales of vinyl albums in 2011 have already outsold the total for the whole of 2010, with over 240,000 LPs shifted, compared to 234,000 in 2010.

Critics have however questioned if it is viable to continue to produce expensive inferior technology when the very low amounts of units sold (only 240,000 in 2011) cannot possibly provide any measure of commercial return on investment?

If you're a rock fan yearning to return to the days of warped vinyl, crackles and scratches, you might be disappointed with the lack of rock music on vinyl. The majority of currently produced vinyl seems to be aimed squarely at the UK student market, and their fascination with indie-pop, with the only possible "rock" band in the current top 10 being Nirvana (albeit the trendy music press seems to class other student favourites Radiohead and Elbow as "Progressive Rock" at the moment).

The 10 best-selling vinyl albums of 2011 in the UK so far are:-

1. Radiohead - The Kings of Limbs
2. Adele - 21
3. Beady Eye - Different Gear, Still Speeding
4. Arctic Monkeys - Suck It and See
5. PJ Harvey - Let England Shake
6. Bon Iver - Bon Iver
7. Alex Turner - Submarine OST
8. Kate Bush - Director's Cut
9. Elbow - Build a Rocket Boys!
10. Nirvana - Nevermind
